A Winter’s Day and a Priest

A Winter’s Day and a Priest

Dedicated to Isa

Feeling weary and wary over these Holly Days of the winter solstice
I thought I’d take a break from all my worldly cares
And do some simple work like feed the fire and shovel snow.
We live on a ridge so near to the sky
And the day was clear blue and quiet wind.
The winter air cool and sun warm and bright
Looking over valley and woods, awe what a sight.
I finished my work and looked around
The peace of white and brown with a touch of evergreen
And the song of the crow in tree tops calling me
And I make a winter’s walk to a wood all so sweet.
Down a path among the trees to a sacred glade I went
There a Yule fire had burned brightly and hot not long ago.
I dug out from the snow the burnt remains of logs
And collected kindling and piled wood together
Ah the next blaze a celebration of midwinter, Imbloc .
I covered my endeavor with a blanket for that time
And went to the altar and wiped it clean of snow
Sang a song of prayer invoking the Goddess and God
Praising the goodness I felt and the beauty I was seeing,
Heard by the trees and echoing into the valley and sky
Such was the joy in being that the fleeting moment lingered for minutes.
The walk home was a delight and my soul was light
I turned to face the warmth of the setting winter sun
Shining behind the ice covered trees smiling in good bye
Yellow orange, blue, white and shades of gray and brown
The Ice Queen in sparkling glory showed her passionate heart
And I turned away and came home in wonder and contentment
With such words as these upon my lips the winter night I kiss.

Never Thirst
