Sweetwood Temenos Winter Solstice 2012

On the Thursday, the day before the winter solstice Sweetwood Temenos had a snow storm with an accumulation of about 12 inches of snow. The high winds with this storm cause big drifts that blocked the driveway and field road back to the ritual site. Iacchus worked on plowing the driveway Thursday night and Friday morning (winter Solstice) and cleared a path down to the circle. All was ready to receive the good folk by noon for the ritual.
The good folk were coming from Madison, Chippewa Falls, Cross Plains and Viola. There were 6 total good folk who arrived for the ritual and 5 stayed the night. One of the good folk was a young man who shoveled an 8 foot radius around the wood of the bonfire and a pathway into the circle and to the altar!
I set the altar in brilliant blue sky day light and where quiet was the song of the woods. I set a candle lantern on the altar and lit the candle in it at 2:58 pm. I prayed for the ritual and the energy it was going to raise and send off to the world as an offering.
After I had everything set up and centered myself I left the young man to watch over the circle and returned to the house to dress and gather up the rest good folk and the priestess for the ritual.
As I led the good folk out the house to go down to the circle and ritual I heard the high pitch sound of some animals. I thought for a moment that they were coyote pups yapping. But no… it was much more beautiful and uncanny. I looked around trying to place the sounds and then I looked up and to my amazement I saw a very large wedge of swans flying overhead. It was a very large wedge with a very long trailing tail of swans heading east. This sight and omen lifted every ones’ hearts.
All came to circle and gathered around the pile of wood for the bonfire. All were welcomed and then Delta and Iacchus began casting the circle with sound and incense. Then they honored the 7 elements of the Sweetwood Temenos circle (Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Ancestors, Descendants and Community) by calling on the good folk of the circle to hold a jar of water, speak and pour a libation for the element which called to them. When all had spoken and the water jar had been returned to the altar, a libation of whiskey was poured at the edge of the circle for Eris and her kin of mischief makers. Then the invocation of the Goddesses and God was spoken and thus the circle was cast.
The Swans came and flew overhead and Iacchus then took from the altar the stang and handing it to Delta said “Where shall we begin”, and she took the stang and said “All is a Spiral with no beginning” and handed the stang back to Iacchus and he said “a tree without end” and handed the stang back to her where upon she said “renewed by the Gods and Goddesses it gives birth to”. Thus is the rhapsody of Sweetwood Temenos
Iacchus went to the altar and placed upon his head the rainbow mask of the herald of the rainbow bridge. Delta took the stang and invoked the Rainbow Herald. The Rainbow Herald thus spoke of the winter solstice and the time of changing ages, whereupon he took the torch, lit it from the candle on the altar, returned to the wood pile of the bonfire and lit it.
The Rainbow Herald then charge all good folk to mediate on the inner or outer divisions, conflicts with in  the soul of Humanity and think of something that would heal that division and make a transformation, a reconciliation or synthesis of opposites. Then with that healing thought take the given ribbon and tie a knot upon my stang. All took time to meditate and then the Rainbow Herald spoke first on ending the sexual war between women and men and spoke of positive sexuality being sacred and one of equality embracing all varieties of erotic relationships. He tied a knot on the stang and then went around to all others to collect their binding magic.
The priestess Delta then led the good folk in the chant of “What was a fight, is now a Delight, together we strive to brighten the light” as the Rainbow Herald danced around the roaring bonfire.  With a great shout and blessing of the fire the Rainbow Herald charged the bonfire and brought the stang and the ribbon bindings to the priestess Delta. She took the ribbon from the stang and with one final blessing and great shout from all, cast the ribbon into the bonfire. The fire roared as it took this offering to the four quarters of Humanity’s soul.
Delta de-invoked the Rainbow Herald and Iacchus returned the mask to the altar and fetched a plate of apple slices cut horizontally to reveal the star in the fruit. He blessed and passed the fruit around for all to eat. Delta then poured charged water from the water jar in to the goblet on the altar and brought it to the circle for water sharing. Starting with her priest Iacchus, the water went around the circle, from hand to hand and mouth to mouth the blessing was spoken; “water shared, is life shared is love shared! Drink deep and may you never thirst! Thou Goddess, thou art God“! The goblet came back to Iacchus for one more libation and he blessed the moment, its offering and all who came to this circle!
Delta and Iacchus returned to the altar and took up the singing bowl and incense and took down the circle. The ritual ended with the charge “the circle is open but never broken, merry meet, merry part and merry meet again!” Whereupon swans flew overhead at sunset as all gathered around the blazing fire drinking wassail. Thus was the winter solstice 2012 at Sweetwood Temenos and the end of one and the beginning of another Mayan world.
As the cold of the night gathered around one of the good folk, Michael led all back to the house with the candle lantern. There back at the house a fest with good fellowship and laughter occurred and went late in to the night. 5 good folk stayed the night and in the morning by the work of a kitchen witch, Michelle, all had eggs, hash browns and pancakes with maple syrup or elderberry jam.
Never Thirst, Iacchus
Please note: At the time of lightening the altar candle, at our location, Jupiter (retrograde) was in the first house, 14 seconds away from an exact conjunction with the Gemini ascendant and this conjunction was 150 degrees (quincunx) away from Pluto in Capricorn and Saturn in Scorpio, which were sextile to each other and all aspects between Jupiter, the ascendant, Pluto and Saturn did not vary by more than 17 seconds (less than a 1/3 of a degree).
In astrology this constellation between three planets where one is quincunx to each of the other two, which are sextile to each other is called the finger of God or fate.

Sweetwood Yule Celebration

December 17th 2011 - Sweetwood Temenos Yule Celebration

Friday night before the Sweetwood Temenos Yule celebration we had a light snow fall of 1-2 inches.

This is the last weekend of a mild and wet autumn since November. At the beginning of November we had a snow fall of 5 inches. But within 3 days it melted and since then only rain and some ice. Over Thanksgiving I was able to build Yule bond fire. I used logs created by cutting up two dead pine trees and splitting old dry oak and maple. The pile of wood stood in the center of the circle and was about 4.5 ft X 4.5 ft and about 4 ft high.

Saturday afternoon a couple of Sweetwood members show up at 1:00 pm and hung out with us for couple of hours. Then at 3:00 pm we walked and carried the ritual tools and items; the goblet, plate, a single white candle, bread, well water, torch, and lighter.
The altar was set with the candle on the south side of the altar, water in the west side of the altar, Bread on the north side of the altar and torch in the east side of the altar. The ritual began with a centering OM that echoed through the woods. The priestess and priest casted the circle by walking the circle round and stopping at each Quarter and giving thanks. The elements, the Goddess, the God and the Divine community were invoked.

We passed the torch around, each holding it and speaking what the return of the light and the meaning of this Holy Day had for them. Then when all were finished the Priest went to the altar to light the torch from the white candle. With the torch light he returned and set the Solstice bond fire ablaze!

While the fire burned we talked about the coming year, particularly given it was 2012 and the ending and renewing of the Mayan calendar,  shared reflections and enjoyed the company of each other. With the fire moving from bellowing plumes of smoke to bright flames the priest went and brought the goblet of water to the fire and started the water sharing. Around went the goblet and sharing water from person to person, looking into each other’s eyes and touching each other’s hearts with these words “Water Shared is Love Shared, is Life Shared, May you Never Thirst! Thou Art God, Thou Art Goddess Drink Deep!

The priest brought forth from the altar some Oat bread and blessed it. Around the bread went until all had their fill. To help wash down the bread, Wassail was served and some toasts were made! All in the late afternoon into twilight with a very hot fire to sit around with the beauty of the land in silent repose only to be sung to by our laughter, conversation and squirrels moving from tree to tree, the moment was subtle and great to behold.

As evening descended, the priestess and priest took down the circle and the priestess invoked the closing that opened the circle. So Merry Meet and Merry part and Merry meet again and we walked back up through the woods into the field and made our way back to the warmth of our house to continue the celebration and some more good food and drink!

Yule 2008

Usually Iacchus writes about the rituals for SweetWood, but this time
I was moved to express our experience of Solstice & the Return of the
Sun.

It started to snow the day before (on Friday) & was still snowing
heavily by the time we snuggled into our coats, hats & scarves,
gathered up our bags of ritual goodies, and set off down the snow-
packed street. The crystalline snow was light & fluffy, but it was a
balmy 25 degrees with little wind. The roads were empty - we had the
winter wonderland to ourselves. (The two other possible participants
were no-shows.)

As most of you know, there is a big hill up to the ridge from La
Farge. With a silent prayer of thankfulness for Gravel roads (thank
You Squat - Goddess of automobiles, roads & parking spots), we just
barely made it to the top. A good omen.

I followed big Iacchus's footprint trail across the open field. Only a
few crows announcing our presence broke the fluffy silence of falling
snow. The snow was so light it reminded me of walking through chiffon
pie. Iacchus had fashioned a torch to light the Yule fire, made from my
old 'holy' wool socks. The torch-handle worked well as a walking stick
as I tried to keep up with the longer strides of my mate. The snow
liked to stick to our coats & hats - we were walking snow-people by
the time we arrived down at the circle.

Iacchus had stacked some big elm logs, log cabin style, with an opening
in the top filled with tinder. The elm was the one near the circle
with the fire extinguisher attached. It was also the one that gave its
life for a nice crop of Morels a couple Springs ago.

We cast the circle with singing bowl & incense, welcoming the watchers
of the quarters to witness our rite. We welcomed Earth, Air, Fire,
Water, ancestors, descendants & community with shouts & laughter. We
acknowledged our invisible connection with many others performing
their own celebrations of the Return of the Light.

We lit a green candle on the altar, then, as we spoke of the Sun
King's long journey back from the underworld, we lit the torch from
the candle. More Joy! More Hope! More love! More Wisdom! More peace!
We shouted blessings as Iacchus held the torch high & then plunged it
into the center. The image of the chalice & blade came to our minds &
we smiled.

At first, smoke appeared. Thick roiling smoke reached to the sky. It
curled like a living DNA strand. We laughed about sending smoke
signals to the Sun. Then, suddenly the wood pile seemed to take a deep
breath. The fire sprang suddenly into life. We sent off more blessings
& our chant morphed into one that we knew very well: "Power, Wisdom,
Clarity, Compassion". We released our intentions for a more beautiful
& peaceful world.

Then we brushed off the snow from our chairs & shared wassail. Jack
made this with apple cider, ale, apples, raisins, cranberries, spices
& some 10+ year old mead that has been aging in our basement since
before we moved to La Farge. We realized that by this time next year,
our house will be built. We drew Runes & talked about the future. We
are so blessed! Our new house will have more room for guests, and we
look forward to housewarming parties & visits with friends.

Evening drew near. We left some dried cranberries & an apple as a gift
for the critters. We thanked the watchers of the directions & took
down the circle. Merry Meet! Merry Part! Merry Meet Again! Then we
banked the fire, and slowly made our way up the hill. We talked to
each other on the way to keep our minds off of how tired our legs
were! It was still snowing when we took the road back home. We came
back home smiling .... and hungry! :)

I wish each of you all a merry holiday and a joyful & fruitful New
Year! Everyone who has been part of SweetWood has touched our lives in
deep & meaningful ways. We are truly grateful for our friends & lovers
- even when we disagree.

It's been way more fun than a decent person needs!

Lets do more next year! ;)

Peace & clean cool water. I pass the cup to you.

Yule 2007

Yule 2007

After Samhain I piled wood about four feet high for the Yule fire. Elm logs on the outside and split oak inside the log frame of the pile. I covered the woodpile and waited for Yule.

It started snowing here at Sweetwood Temenos on December 1st. By Yule there was 16inches of snow on the ground. The only way back to the circle was to hike back. A couple of brave souls were planning on attending Yule here at Sweetwood Temenos. We were going to celebrate the season of Yule with ritual, water sharing and a pot luck feast. I made wassail for the Yule feast and toasting.

However on the Yule the weather was threatening and those brave souls who were planning on coming to celebrate canceled. I was determined to go up to Sweetwood Temenos and celebrate Yule.

I drove up, parked on the township road at the entrance and hiked back with the wassail, an apple and a goblet. The storm was coming and it began to lightly snow. Down to the circle all quiet and gray I went. Deep snow covered the whole circle and I set about the task of clearing the snow from the covered Yule firewood.

With a little lamp oil and some paper the Yule fire started. I set up the altar with a goblet filled with wassail and an offering of a sliced apple. The fire roared as the fog drifted in. The woods were silent, no caw of crows or sounds of scampering squirrels, only the solitary human in a stone circle covered with white stirred.

I stood before the Altar and invoked the Goddess and God of Yule and their names echoed through the woods and rolled down into the valley. I poured a libation of wassail to them.

Then I spoke my heart about the trouble in the world and what needed to happen to create peace. I poured a libation of wassail to world peace.

I then spoke of Sweetwood, its land, and all the life therein. I wish Sweetwood well and gave thanks for being its steward. I poured a libation to Sweetwood and gave a great shout.

I prayed then for the health and well being for the people of Sweetwood, my family and my friends and lovers. I offered another libation of wassail and so mote it be.

I sat before the fire eating a slice of apple and drinking Wassail. I thought about my past, about the future and returned to the moment. A deep peace settled over me as I stayed with the moment and looked into the fire. Time stood still yet moved by. Too soon it was getting dark.

I went to the altar, kissed it and thanked the God and Goddess for this Yule and pour the last of the wassail as a libation to this celebration. I walked back up through the woods to the field. As I went I would look back at the silent roaring fire, brilliantly burning in a circle of white, illuminating the gathering dark. Like the returning light I wanted the memory of the fire to remind me during the days of winter of the promise that spring too would return.

I returned home in the darkness of the first night of winter. I felt connected to nature and my ancestors, at peace and soulful.  This was my 2007 Yule.

The Yule Tree is Ever Green

The Yule Tree is Ever Green

Oh Immanent and Transcendent Mystery
Of the Two great Ways of Being
The powers of God and Goddess
Whose Chaos, Harmony and Wholeness
Give possibility, change and form to space
As they spiral and Dance the double helix
Creating our Universe and Tree of Life!

We give thanks for our Blessed Tree of Life
And for the planets that are its flowers
Where evolved life can speak and hear these words
And in nobility answer the question
How do the Trees of Life multiple in Paradise?
But through a communion of souls
Sharing Water in the mystic Green Flame
That is the Love and Wisdom of redeemed hearts
Upon the altar and hearth of Freedom and Friendship
Whose glory, equality and humility we drink deeply
And consummate in the togetherness of Divinity.

Yule, some thoughts and speculation on its meaning for a Neo-pagan.

Yule, some thoughts and speculation on its meaning for a Neo-pagan.

Yule has come to signify the Winter solstice for Neo-pagans. It is the time when the amount of daytime light is shortest and the night is longest. It also is a cusp time when the light starts to grow again and the dark begins to wane. The further north or south one goes from the equator the more pronounced the experience of this growing light and diminishing dark. I believe this phenomenon drew forth from the human unconscious certain archetypical religious ideas that became associated with the experiences and customs of peoples relative to the climate and geography they lived in.

The increasing light was part of the changing of seasons. The increasing light heralds always the coming of the season of spring. Spring was experienced as a new rebirth of vegetation. This rebirth of vegetation became a symbol that life does return after the “death” of winter.  So the winter solstice came to be associated with the spark of Hope, the eternal promise kept that there is life in death and life will return after death just as surely the spring follows winter. In this way the increasing light of the winter solstice was an omen that spring will return.

Some of our ancestors pondered this omen in regards to human’s experience of birth, life and death. They saw that humans were creatures similar to other creatures and like them humans experienced the waxing, waning and the seasons of life. They also on rare occasions noted that some children were born or expressed physical characteristics, behaviors or memories reminiscent of kin who have died. Some of our ancestors saw this as another omen that some essence of the human being, we are in this life, survives the experience of death and is reborn. This constant essence was seen as the same as the essence of the stars, the light of the Deities living in the heavens. This eventually became known as the quintessence of the human soul.

This quintessence of the human soul is its dignity, Divinity and immortality. Various spiritual and religious myths have attempted to explain how this quintessence got into the blood of humans, or ensouled and the meaning of being reincarnated.

In the western tradition the quintessence is envisioned by some Gnostics as sparks or microcosmic stars, in the darkness, the ignorance, of humanity’s souls. Remembering ones quintessence was the beginning of the salvation of one’s soul. Indeed I believe Jesus was a witness to this idea for he is quoted to have said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God”. Here the idea is if one makes peace then this process will manifest the quintessence. So any man or woman may claim kinship with the Deities or the Divine if they become peacemakers.

This process of “making peace”, I believe, is expressed in Alchemy by the distillation process that changed  “lead” into the “Gold”.

“The darkness has its parallel in the alchemical nigredo, which occurs after the coniunctio, when the female takes the male into herself. From the nigredo issues the stone, the symbol of the immortal self; moreover, its first appearance is likened to ‘ fish eyes’ (C.G. Jung, The Archetypes of the Unconscious pp.140)”.

These ‘fish eyes’ are
“scintilla, or soul spark, the innermost divine essence of man…symbols which just as well express a God image, namely the image of Deity unfolding in the world, in nature, and in man (C.G. Jung, The Archetypes of the Unconscious pp.389)”.

Jung named this quintessence, to which the sparks in the darkness, the scintilla and the image of Deity symbolically refer to, the Self. So as a Neo-pagan I see Jung’s process of individuation of the Self to be like the unconscious biological process that increasingly builds physical integrity and integration towards the completion of a fetus and the birth of a child. Only individuation is a Self-conscious process whose building up of psychological integrity and integration can lead to a completion symbolized as a Divine Child. This completion, I believe, is a Self-actualization of the quintessence, the Divinity of the human soul.

For me then each Yule, when the light is the smallest, I remember the myth of the microcosmic stars in the dark, the Divinity in all souls. I contemplate what needs to be done to increase my psychological integrity and integration and foster it in others… out with the old and in with the new. The celebration of Yule remembers the quintessence, the Divinity of the soul, the source of love from whence it came and the promise of rebirth, the psychological completion symbolized as a Divine Child. There is also a remembering that the psychological completion symbolized as a Divine Child is not one of perfection but of wholeness sufficient, like the birth of a child, for the next stage of growth. To remember this, is to open the gate to the rainbow bridge.

Solstice Eve 2005

Yule – Solstice eve 2005

Today, I took a walk…my morning walk…after my half way point I turned around to head home and the last light in the sky before the Sun rise was Venus twinkling before me and shone upon me…I fell into contemplating about Yule and what the Winter solstice means to me and here is what came to me…

Consider the whole of our planet, our earth with its mountains, valley, plains, rivers, lakes and oceans. Think on its fiery core and the crusty surface we call land and the atmosphere, the sky, the air that surrounds the land and water. Think of the earth’s weather, the storms with lighting and thunder, of floods, tornados, hurricanes, of tidal waves and earthquakes, of blizzards and drought and of those days of fair weather and gentle rain during spring, summer, autumn or winter that makes your heart glad with joy. Think of all life that lives whether in water, in air or on land and from the very tiny to the very large, plant, animal and sometimes something in between. Think of the danger and grace each life has, look at the slime, spider and snake and what may be ugly or poisonous and then flowers, doves and porpoise what seems beautiful and harmless.

Then think of the whole Earth and all its forces of nature and life, birth, death and rebirth each with its seasons of happiness and sadness operating together in a great harmony…neither perfect nor static but rather a dynamic wholeness and great goodness. Then think of our Earth’s dynamic wholeness and great goodness as a manifestation and reflection of love and wisdom and a way of being called Divine. Then consider the miracle that the light of consciousness is when it recognizes in the darkness of our souls there exists this dynamic wholeness and great goodness, a way of being called Divine, the light of our souls. When we recognize the light of our soul, our Divinity and the light of Divinity in another’s soul then the gift of love is given and the light grows. So at Yule we remember and celebrate the light of our souls, the waxing growth of this light and the gift of love... for we are Divine and young sparks that may grow into a constellation of stars someday.

For me the birth of a savior born in a manger is a call to remember and witness the light of Divinity in each human soul. For it is said we are created in the image of the Elohim, the Goddesses and Gods.
As water is more precious in our universe than all the gems that can be found
And water is a symbol of the spirit of Divinity
Water shared, is life shared, is love shared! Thou art Goddess! Thou art God! May you never thirst!

Blessed Be
Iacchus
